Hey guys!
A couple guys and I just started a Weezer cover band, and I was just wondering if any of you were/have been in a Weezer cover band before, and had any stories/advice to share.
Also: does anyone have any name suggestions?
I knew a Weezer cover band in college that called themselves "Geezer." I was thinking "Superman Skivvies" (especially since I might be making Weezer superhero costumes for the rest of the band), but we haven't decided yet.

Permalink Reply by Paperface on March 31, 2011 at 1:20pm I'm in a band called Paperface, but we're not a Weezer cover band. We cover "El Scorcho" and "Say It Ain't So." But, write originals, because that's the thing to do.
Permalink Reply by =gregor= on March 31, 2011 at 1:41pm I'm in cover band. We do "Getting Up and Leaving" and "Hot Tub". We also do "Kokomo" by the Beach Boys, Silversun Pickups, Jimmy Eat World, Usher, etc....
The most difficult thing is tuning your guitars. Either have 2 guitars, or transpose everything so you are either playing 1/2 step down tuning, or standard tuning. I think it's easier to play in 1/2 step down tuning....most of the songs you'll want to play are written in 1/2 step down anyways (Pink, Blue, Red, Make Believe...)
And if you are a true =w= cover band, one member of your band MUST have a lightening bolt guitar strap.

Permalink Reply by WeezerWoman on March 31, 2011 at 9:50pm Well, there are two (maybe three--depending on who ends up being the drummer) guys in the band, so maybe something a little more gender neutral?
I thought about Superman Skivvies, but I don't know that that's instantly recognizable.
Also, to address the comments about cover bands:
Writing my own music is my eventual goal. However, I've never felt the urge to write until the last year or so. This is a good chance for me to learn all the working parts and pieces. Eventually I hope to do some originals--the other guys in the band seem really great, and I see a lot of potential in them. We might expand to other covers in the mean time. We tried a "rock" version of Jason Mraz, which turned out... meh.
I'm discovering that I love to play bass. I've only played piano, ukelele, and a little guitar before, but the bass is different. Plus, it feels good against my hips. : D
