My favorite guitar podcast, Six String Bliss, gave long overdue props to Rivers' guitar playing during their most recent episode. When Undone was recommended by one of the hosts as a song that should be jammed at an upcoming gathering, the other host admitted that he had some trepidation with regard to playing Weezer songs due to Rivers being a "very accomplished guitarist." He was then talked down with the assurance that the song basically consists of four power chords.

Rivers is an exceptional guitarist, but weezer's genre consists of really easy guitar stuff.
True that the bulk of weezer's material is pretty rudimentary, but many of Rivers' solos show a great deal of virtuosity.  Not necessarily in the Yngvie, Vai, Satriani sense of the word, but he has the ability to convey the message of the song in a few bars like few other guitarists can (John Frusciante is another contemporary that comes to mind).
