So after listening to Make Belive then reading up on a few of the songs like Hold Me, Peace, Haunt you Every Day etc
I found out that Rivers wrote most of the songs while Fasting or in a state of meditation which placed him in an emotional frame of mind.
Do you think if the album was self produced like Pinkerton or Maladroit the album would have been similar to a Second Pinkerton?

Permalink Reply by Paperface on April 6, 2011 at 7:22am To be fair on Rivers, that could've well been Rubin's fault. Didn't the guy tell Rivers that he likes broad, easy to decipher lyrics and that he wanted to flatten the irony (= charm and interest) out of Rivers' songwriting?

Permalink Reply by =gregor= on April 6, 2011 at 8:02am there will never be a Pinkerton 2. Wish all you want, but what makes Pinkerton so special, is that there is and will never be anything like it.
Other band's albums are similar to Pinkerton. I'll say of a band, "That's their Pinkerton", as in that's the album that was under-appreciated, but really their best work to date. Like Brand New's "The Devil and God Are Raging Inside of Me".
I don't think Rick Rubin had a very big hand in the creative process of Make Believe. Weezer recorded the whole thing without Rick around, and then just sent him songs to listen to. If Rick did advise River's to write broad lyrics, then that is a shame. I hope every album from here on out is self-produced.....or by Dr. Luke
i really liked it but i don't think it is like Pinkerton but i can see why people think it's kinda like Pinkerton.

Permalink Reply by Andy on April 6, 2011 at 4:47pm Hell yes. Make Believe is probably my second favourite Weezer album after Pinkerton anyway. Every song (apart from Beverly Hills) is so catchy and fun, sure the lyrics aren't as brilliant as they are on Pinkerton but thy are sweet and genuinely heartfelt so I can't help but love it. Had it been self produced it would have definitely been as great as Pinkerton. In my eyes at least.
