I want to see if Weezer Fans will help bring aid to Japan!

Japan has lost nearly 10,000 people in this disaster, I think its time for the Weezer fans to come together and help out. I really don't no how to set up a charity to be honest, and I'd rather not use Redcross because most of what gets donated doesn't even make it to the cause half the time. Mark Hoppus started selling his private collection of goodies for help raise money, my hopes is that Karl can setup something along the same lines. For now lets get some ideas together and figure out how we can help. Any weezer fan knows that without Japan this band wouldnt been around today so lets brain storm some ideas!

I support the idea of helping out, especially as a community.

I'm not sure what you've heard about the Red Cross though. I'm sure there must be other organisations that are worth supporting, for example Médecins Sans Frontières. (I hope that doesn't count as spam, if it does, I apologise).

Meanwhile, perhaps there's some additional way of communicating our support to fellow Weezer fans in Japan? I'm interested to hear other peoples ideas.

no luls

Setting up a charity takes a lot of time and effort to establish; and there is actually a lot of "red tape" to get through, and much more so in times of current disasters--mainly because they are trying to glean out fraud, which unfortunately happens--which is why people should always do their homework before donating.

Red Cross isn't bad; but you are right that donated monies usually go into a general world emergency fund, and it gets doled out however it deems most dire; so if you want your donation to specifically go to a certain cause, it's better to try and donate to organizations that are/have contacts locally at the disaster areas you are aiming to help...

There are lots of other established organizations that can be donated to other than Red Cross--on this site here, there lists several with teams on ground in Japan (scroll down past Red Cross, which of course is on everyone's list); and @Danielle, Doctors without Borders is listed here as having sent to two teams:

Anyway I don't work for any of these; but it is something I came across in doing my own research as to where I I could send my own donations. Perhaps there are Weezer fans in Japan that are members here and can make suggestions to donating to any aid centers closer to the affected areas.

I can't believe the magnitude and sheer number of all these aftershocks--so many of them are 5 or higher--what we would consider a "big" earthquake here!

i completly agree with your idea maybe weezer should do a charity gig to raise money for them but i can't think of too much at the moment.
I would like to point out that Mark Hoppus is donating all of the proceeds to the Red Cross...
Yes I no that mark is using Red Cross, I was just using him as a example how a member of a band can help. I wasn't trying to bash Red Cross because they do alot of good but the money people send them gets spread out and not directly to the cause that you wanted to donate towards.
That'd be awesome

for all the talking about donating there doesn't seem to be much actual donating.

pick a charity, post a link, done. money is money is money.
the victims don't give a fluck if it's coming from a group of weezer fans.

Hey so right now World Vision looks like a solid choice so lets get this ball rolling

Weezer should release a demo preview of the next album for anyone who donates $5+

if you want to/can help out, i agree with the above commenters reccomending giving what you can to reputable charities. its the fastest most no nonsense way to do something immediately, and every individual, whether in a band, a fan, or anyone can do it. This abc news article has a comprehensive list of good charities who are all good choices for donations.
