Best quarterback of all time and why?
I think that this is a more difficult question that may be readily apparent.
My vote goes to Joe Montana, despite hating the 49ers back when I was a kid.
I think it's especially difficult to compare quarterbacks from different eras for various reasons, and one HUGE reason in particular- remember these days you can barely even TOUCH a receiver as a defensive back, and this makes the passing game far easier in my opinion, which is why I would give Montana the nod over more recent future-Hall-of-Famers such as Brady and Manning.
Also, while he is definitely NOT the greatest QB of all time, I'll add that Jim Kelly is underrated. Sure he lost FOUR Super Bowls in a row, but to rack up all that passing yardage and all those wins when half his games are being played in cold and windy Buffalo is a heck of an achievement.

Ah, I ignored my own rule and didn't say why. Regarding Montana, the rings, the stats, and the cool demeanor. Growing up a Rams fan and thus hating Montana, I was still in awe at the inescapable feeling I got every time he threw a pass- it always felt like a big play was about to occur despite the nickel-and-dime style of the West Coast offense, and you could never count the 49ers out of a game when he was at the helm...what a great performer under pressure.

I'm happy to say I'm the 4th football fan on these boards! My vote goes to Montana as well. He was such a clutch performer and a classy individual. An honorable mention goes to John Elway. What an arm! When it's all said and done, Peyton Manning may go down as the all time greatest. Btw... Go Bears!!!!

5th football fan here. My vote says Johnny U and Dan Marino.... maybe Brett Favre even though I hate him now. Give it time though and Peyton Manning will be the greatest QB ever. Not only will he have the numbers, but he is the most intelligent football player ever (football intelligence).
Definitely Montana, Elway, Kelly, Bradshaw, were all great too.

As much as I do not like to say it Joe Montana would have to be the best followed by Brett Farve. But realistically when all is said and done my vote would go to Peyton Manning. As time goes one He will end up being the best.

How do you rate quarterbacks? A lot of people think wins are what make a great quarterback. I am strongly opposed to such thinking. Teams win games. Often, the quarterback is responsible for some of those wins. Other times, he’s along for the ride and the team wins because it has a great defense or a strong running game.
Bradshaw, who threw only two more touchdowns than interceptions in his career, is a great case in point. If the Steelers had to rely on him to get to their first two Super Bowls, they never would have made it.
Just as wins or even Super Bowl wins don’t tell the story, neither do statistics.
Here’s the top 10 all-time in passing yards:
Brett Favre, Dan Marino, John Elway, Peyton Manning, Warren Moon, Fran Tarkenton, Vinny Testaverde, Drew Bledsoe, Dan Fouts, Joe Montana.
There are a couple of names in there that would draw only laughter if mentioned among the all-time greats.
What about touchdown passes? Here’s that top 10.
Favre; Marino, Manning, Tarkenton, Elway, Moon, Johnny Unitas, Testaverde, Montana, Dave Krieg.
Passer rating?
Aaron Rodgers, Steve Young, Phillip Rivers, Tony Romo, Manning, Kurt Warner, Tom Brady, Montana, Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger.
Here's the top eight in yards per attempt, which some people consider the most important quarterback statistic:
Otto Graham, Sid Luckman, Norm Van Brocklin, Tony Romo, Roethlisberger, Young, Warner, Ed Brown (five-way tie for ninth).
In every statistical category there are players who clearly don’t belong in the discussion. And that includes Testaverde, who’s in the top 10 and yardage and touchdowns.
A lot of people lean toward titles, which, as stated, I believe to be just as wrong as using statistics. Here are the 10 QBs with the most Super Bowl wins.
Bradshaw and Montana with 4; Brady and Troy Aikman with 3; Elway, Roethlisberger, Roger Staubach, Jim Plunkett, Bob Griese and Bart Starr with 2.
Plunkett absolutely destroys the notion that championships determine the greatness of a quarterback. He’s tied for fourth, but I doubt he’d rank in the top 100.
He’s some more thought for those who put stock in ``rings.’’
Although the NFL would like us to think otherwise, there actually was football before the Super Bowl era. If you go back to 1950, Starr won five NFL titles. Does that make him the greatest? Unitas and Graham won three.
There is no formula for determining the best quarterback.

Favre has some good stats primarily due to being in the league so long but he has turned the ball over way too many times in important situations. If I couldn't have Montana, I'd take Elway or Marino in crunch time, both were more clutch than Favre. Also recall that when Favre lost that Super Bowl to Elway's Broncos, the Packers had been considered to be the superior team, but Favre couldn't get it done.

Yes true but either way you look at it Unfortunatley Brett is ranked higher. Now if you talk about clutch qb's of all time for me it would be Johnny Unitas, then Montana, followed by Elway. But again just my opinion.

I agree with your take on Manning's intelligence. I'm not sure if he calls his own plays or what, but you can tell with all the adjustments he makes at the line that his football I.Q. is off the charts. I'd like to see him win another title or two before crowning him the greatest. We shall see.

Favre is ranked higher? Where? He's not even top 10 in passer rating. Not sure what you mean. If you mean he's got the most yards and TDs, yes that's true but you have to consider how long he's played...

I'll also add that Favre is the NFL's all-time leader in fumbles lost and interceptions thrown. Like his passing yardage and TDs, this may be due (in part) to the length of his career, but consider this- Vinnie Testaverde (at worst a horrible QB and at best a mediocre one) played 20 years from 1987-2007 (that's one more year than Favre yas played) and threw around 60 less interceptions than Favre...
