I never listened to Pink Floyd but was thinking they might be a good influence on my songwriting.  what do you guys think?  And what other epic rock records out there should I listen to?  thanks.

T-Rex was a great idea.  They don't have a greatest hits cd anywhere, but Electric Warrior is a great cd.  They would be a great influence, if Marc Bolan hasn't already been there with you.

Really, that's a question a person has to discover on their own. "Epic Rock Records." There's quite a few. Lyric wise I think Kurt Cobain had a good idea with blending lyrics that didn't necessarily go together. It wasn't the meaning behind his lyrics as much as it was the flow of the lyrics, sang on all the right parts. Music wise... Maybe Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin. It's a double album that employs various styles of music and considered by many "their last really great album" and also a favorite among a lot of Led Zeppelin fans. It has light, shade, heavy, soft, Rock, Blues, Funk, Folk, "Indian" music, sober music, drunk music, etc. Plus the song Kasmir is an epic.

Just open up to various styles and bands you like. One day I'll listen to something like Pantera, the next day I'll listen to Kim Wilde or La Roux. Complete opposites.

Rivers definitely has never listened to Kurt Cobain.
He probably hasn't. Didn't realize who started this thread until a moment ago. I feel kind of dumb giving musical advice to someone who has a successful career in music and has probably heard Physical Graffiti a billion times before. I was thinking it was some kid who started this. lol :)

Can people stop bumping this? I don't think Rivers even posts here anymore.

Also, I don't think Smashmouth is the type of influence he needs.

i think absolutely think its time for weezer to do a rock opera where the songs all blend together and morph into each other. would love to see that.

Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Pixies, Nirvana.
