Permalink Reply by if-i-were-an-orange on November 14, 2010 at 7:27pm It depends on the writing style you're going for. There are many great songwriters and wordsmiths out there, but they all have different approaches. Personally, I don't listen to albums particularly for songwriting influences; I mainly just let the words flow freely, yet they of course are going to be naturally influenced by just about everything I've listened to regularly in my life.
Best approach if you're like me and NOT a guitar player (i sing, write, and play drums): Have a songwriting buddy sit down for a few hours and just keep playing the same thing over and over, get yourself a pen and some paper, and just let the words come out. You may come up with a lot of garbage, but there's always a diamond in the rough. Hit a good stride and it will build speed. I promise.
EDIT: Hahahahaha, I just noticed who actually posted this thread, so I guess of course you're a guitar player. Also, why the hell do I think I'm pretentious enough to tell you how to write songs? I'm keeping this post here, unedited apart from this postnote edit, for comedic purposes. Good stuff.
